Welcome to Our Favorite Memories. Your family's memories are deeply personal, and protecting them is one of our highest priorities. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app collects, how it's used and stored, and the choices you have.
Our Commitment
Our Favorite Memories was created to help families preserve the words, voices, photographs, and moments that become priceless over time. We believe those memories belong to you and should remain under your control. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how your information is stored and used.
Memories You Choose to Save
Depending on how you use the app, you may create and store:
Written memories, quotes, titles, and notes
Voice recordings and their transcripts
Photos you choose to add to a memory or to a Story Member
Story Members — the people your memories are about — including names, relationships, birthdays, short bios, and optional profile photos
Answers to prompts, interviews, and custom questions
Dates, tags, and favorite status
Widget and app settings
You decide what to add. This content may include information about children or other people in your life; you're responsible for what you choose to record and save about them.
Optional Profile Information
The app's Profile screen lets you enter a first name, last name, email address, password, and a photo. All of this is optional except a password, which is only used locally by the app itself — it is never sent anywhere and is stored securely in your device's Keychain, not in plain text. Your email address is used only if you separately choose to turn on Memory Reminders & Inspiration, described below; simply entering it on the Profile screen does not send it anywhere.
How Your Memories Are Stored
Your memories are stored using technologies provided by Apple. When your device is signed into iCloud, your written memories, photos, Story Members, prompt answers, and other memory content synchronize automatically through your own private iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit service. This keeps your memories available across your own devices signed into the same Apple ID. This data is stored in your private iCloud/CloudKit database and is not made publicly available or stored on servers operated by Our Favorite Memories.
Our Favorite Memories does not provide shared family accounts and does not automatically share your memories with other users.
Voice Recording Backup
Voice recordings are always saved on your device first. When iCloud is available, the app also backs up your recordings to your own private iCloud account, separately from the sync described above, so a lost or replaced device doesn't mean a lost recording. Backup happens quietly in the background after a recording is saved and never delays saving a memory. The private iCloud copy is a backup, not a replacement — your recording always stays on your device too, and is only fetched back down automatically if it's ever missing locally, such as after setting up a new device.
If a recording hasn't yet finished backing up, the app may show you a status message about it. We encourage you to pay attention to these messages and keep your device backed up if a recording is especially meaningful to you.
On-Device Speech Recognition
When you record a memory, the app can use Apple's Speech Recognition technology to create a written transcript. This happens entirely on your device — the app specifically uses Apple's on-device recognition mode and does not send your recordings to Apple's or anyone else's servers for this purpose. You can review, edit, or remove a transcript at any time.
Photos, Camera, and Microphone
The app only asks for access to your Photos, Camera, or Microphone at the moment you choose a feature that needs them — for example, adding a photo to a memory or recording a voice memory. If you decline microphone access, you can still use the app's written memory features. You can review or change any of these permissions at any time in your device's Settings.
Memory Reminders & Inspiration (Optional Email Feature)
Separate from everything above, the app offers an optional email feature called Memory Reminders & Inspiration — occasional emails with prompts, reminders, and ideas for capturing memories. This feature is off by default.
What's sent, and when. Your first name and email address are sent off your device only if you explicitly turn this feature on in the app's Profile screen. Nothing is sent before that point, and nothing is sent automatically just because you entered an email address on your Profile.
Where it goes. When you opt in, your first name and email address are sent to a small backend service we operate, built on infrastructure provided by Deno, which keeps track of whether you've opted in and when. To actually deliver an email, that service passes your email address and the message content to Resend, a third-party email delivery provider. Resend receives only what's needed to send that one email — your address, a subject line, and the message itself.
What is never sent. Your memories, quotes, Story Member information, photos, voice recordings, transcripts, prompt answers, and tags are never transmitted to this email system, regardless of whether you've opted in. This feature only ever knows your first name and email address — nothing else about your account or your content.
How opt-in and opt-out work. Turning "Send me these emails" on registers your consent with our backend and may trigger a one-time welcome email. Turning it off tells that same backend directly to stop — it isn't just a setting stored on your phone. Every email we send also includes its own unsubscribe link, which works independently of the app and updates the same underlying record. Because our backend is the single source of truth for this preference, the app periodically checks it — for example, when you open your Profile — so the toggle in the app always reflects what's actually happening, even if you unsubscribed by tapping a link in an email rather than using the app.
Removing your information. You can permanently remove your name and email address from this email system at any time, from the Profile screen, under Memory Reminders & Inspiration — look for "Remove My Email Information." This requires a confirmation step and does not affect your memories, Story Members, photos, recordings, transcripts, prompts, or any other content in the app; it only affects this optional email feature.
When you remove your information, your name and your actual email address are deleted from our systems. What remains afterward is a non-reversible technical marker — a scrambled version of your email address that cannot be converted back into a readable address, plus the date of your request. This is kept solely to prevent an accidental future email from reaching you again due to a technical error, and it does not prevent you from choosing to opt in again yourself at any time; doing so is treated as a fresh signup.
Recently Deleted and Permanent Deletion
When you delete a memory (or a Story Member, custom question, or question collection), it moves to Recently Deleted, where it remains for up to 30 days. During that time, you can restore it if it was deleted by mistake, or choose to delete it permanently right away. Once a memory is permanently deleted — whether you did so directly or the 30-day period passed — its content, any locally stored files, and any private iCloud backup copy of its recording are removed and cannot be recovered.
No Advertising, Tracking, or Sale of Your Information
We do not use your memories, Story Member information, or any other personal content to build advertising profiles, and we do not use it to train artificial intelligence models. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers or use it for third-party marketing.
The one exception, described in full above, is Memory Reminders & Inspiration: if you choose to opt in, Deno and Resend process the limited information needed (your first name and email address) purely to operate that feature on our behalf. That is service-provider processing to deliver something you asked for — it is not a sale, and it is not sharing your information for advertising, profiling, or anyone else's marketing purposes.
No Analytics or Advertising SDKs
Our Favorite Memories does not include any analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising software from other companies. The app does not use Apple's advertising identifier or ask for tracking permission, because it doesn't track you across other apps or websites at all.
Apple Services We Use
The app relies on the following Apple technologies to provide its features:
iCloud / CloudKit (your own private database) — for memory sync and voice recording backup
Speech Recognition — on-device only, for creating transcripts
Photos and Camera — only when you choose to add a photo
Notifications — scheduled locally on your device, not sent from a server
Widgets — displayed using information stored only in a private, on-device container shared between the app and its widget
Share Sheet — used when you choose to export or share a memory
Your use of these Apple services is also subject to Apple's own privacy practices.
Children's Privacy and Family Content
Our Favorite Memories is intended for use by parents, grandparents, guardians, and other adults. The app is not directed to children and does not ask children to create accounts or provide information directly to us. Adults using the app may choose to save memories, photographs, recordings, and other information about children in their lives.
The app has no features that invite a child to interact with it on their own or to contact us directly. Deciding what to record and save about a child remains the responsibility of the adult using the app.
Security
We rely on the security protections built into Apple's operating systems and iCloud/CloudKit, along with the device Keychain for anything sensitive stored locally, such as your Profile password. No method of electronic storage or transmission can be guaranteed completely secure, but we've designed the app so that as little information as possible ever leaves your device in the first place. You can further protect your information by keeping your device's passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, and Apple ID security up to date.
Your Choices and Controls
You're in control of your information at every point:
Create, edit, and organize your memories and Story Members
Delete a memory (or restore it within 30 days) at any time
Choose whether to add an email address to your Profile at all
Turn Memory Reminders & Inspiration on or off at any time, independent of any other setting
Remove your name and email address from the email system entirely, whenever you'd like
Enable or disable microphone, camera, or photo access at any time in your device's Settings
Turn off iCloud sync for the app through your device's Settings if you no longer want your memories to sync
Remove the app from your device at any time
Changes to This Privacy Policy
As Our Favorite Memories continues to evolve, we may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to the app. When we do, we'll update the Effective Date at the top of this page, and we'll provide additional notice if a change is significant.
